If I were a useless machine, I would be a loose-needled thread wound around a wooden spool balanced on a coiled spring, ready to writhe, jiggle, and prick. This drawing is inspired by Francis Picabia’s mechanical portraits, which functioned as Dada critiques of futurism and love letters to his friends. The tenor of his work is relevant today, in an age when our every activity is commodified and measured in the machine of capitalism. Sometimes all we can be is useless.
